The musical documentary “Crossing Rachmaninoff” follows aspiring Italian pianist Flavio Villani as he prepares to play Rachmaninoff’s demanding Piano Concert No. 2 in Italy, his debut performance as a soloist with an Orchestra. The movie begins in Auckland and travels with Flavio to Calabria, Italy, for his first rehearsals with an Orchestra which reveals the dynamics of orchestral musicians and those who play with them. The performance, the biggest night of Flavio’s life, will confirm his arrival as a concert pianist and vindicate his decision to be a musician and become accepted in the classical musical world. The movie explores the single minded commitment necessary to become a concert pianist. Flavio must challenge traditional musical thinking and battle personal demons for a chance to make music his life.
“Crossing Rachmaninoff is a personal odyssey, with all the elements of drama and catharsis that Rachmaninoff himself depicts so splendidly. It explores the fundamental desire to be accepted for who we are, the beauty of music and the courage of those who make it.” Rebecca Tansley - Director
“Exhilirating...an intimate portrait of a young musician scaling the heights” - Director, NZ International Film Festival
“A touching and engrossing portrait of the artist” – Peter Calder – NZ Herald
